Statistics can be deceiving, including regional and national data. health care organizations are historically weak in aggression data collection and, for some settings, data are non-existent. Because risk managers typically only see data related to staff/patient injury, internal data may deem the risk too low to merit attention and resources. OSHA has encouraged health care establishments to develop and institute zero tolerance practices for aggression for many years. This was done to work to eliminate “unsafe work environments” for which OSHA regulates. While many organizations have written plans for workplace violence, often such plans are not implemented or enforced.
