Leadership Summit to feature governance track

The American Hospital Association’s 2018 Leadership Summit, "Advancing Affordable Care and Promoting Value," to be held July 26-28 in San Diego, will offer hospital and health system trustees dedicated programming to connect the work of governance to the challenges of delivery system transformation.

The Summit’s Governance Excellence track provides trustees with special opportunities to dive deeper into emerging trends and best practices. Through peer-to-peer learning opportunities, case-study analysis and strategic discussion with governance experts, trustees will gain practical ideas to enhance their knowledge and performance. Governance adviser James E. Orlikoff will serve as the navigator for trustees throughout the track, facilitating translation of the critical issues addressed at the summit to best practices for boards.

On Thursday, July 26, hospital and health system trustees can join Orlikoff for a presummit workshop as he shares strategies and tools for boards to maximize the effectiveness of their decision-making during this complex and risky time for health care.

Following the workshop, Priya Bathija, vice president in charge of the AHA’s Value Initiative, will facilitate an interactive lunch session on what hospitals and health systems can do to reduce health care costs and improve the value of the health care services they offer.

Friday kicks off with a Trustee Breakfast featuring ProMedica’s Karen Strauss and Elizabeth Michalak. The pair will discuss how ProMedica’s data-driven, strategic discussions at its board meetings have led to increased trustee engagement and an improved governance culture. During the lunch, Nathan Kaufman, managing director at Kaufman Strategic Advisors LLC, will give a presentation on the handful of crucial strategies that every health system must focus on to ensure optimal performance.

Finally, Saturday’s Trustee Breakfast brings back Orlikoff, as Steve Gordon, M.D., of consultancy Point B, joins him to share a case study on managing smooth board succession.

In addition to these sessions, the Trustee Networking Center will provide opportunities to gather insights and ideas on good governance, sit down with our experts and network with other trustees. This includes the Trustee Networking Reception on Thursday afternoon as well as our Trustee Roundtables on Friday.

The three Trustee Roundtables will focus on CEO succession planning, mergers and affiliations, and best practices in governance.
