Diagnostic test ordering — with thousands of choices — has become daunting for physicians. This can lead to over- and under-utilization of tests and treatment and add significant costs to care. A diagnostic management team comprised of pathologists and others in the clinical laboratory can partner with physicians to ensure proper ordering and utilization of diagnostic tests, thus reducing costs and diagnostic error. The National Academy of Medicine has recognized the diagnostic management team as experts who can provide information to health care providers on the appropriate diagnostic tests to order. In this webinar, Michael Laposata, MD, PhD, FCAP, will describe the diagnostic management team and its activity, and the barriers to its full implementation in American health care.
